History
As a young child, Shika struggled in his studies. Easily frustrated, he all but gave up on trying to improve. Through elementary school, Shikamaru settled into comfortably just barely getting by, much to his parents' distaste. But try as they might, they never were able to instill Shikamaru with motivation to live up to his potential--perhaps because he doesn't believe he has any more.

Going into high school, Shikamaru developed an interest in martial arts. Finding something in common with some of his peers had a positive effect for him; he began socializing more and started making friends, although few particularly close ones. As a result, he found the inspiration to pull up his grades and get into college. Unfortunately, now in a new environment and feeling alone, Shika has slipped back into old habits and become quite the slacker again.

Personality
Shikamaru is, in a word, lazy. Every report card he's gotten in his life has be scrawled with the words "if he only applied himself." He's not outgoing, but he's not quite shy either; he is more than anything, simply apathetic. He doesn't try very hard at making friends since he is usually brushed off by his peers, who perceive him as cold or unfriendly since he doesn't make an effort to connect with people. It seems everything to Shika is "too much trouble."
